How to Propose in Courchevel: Spots, Timing and Planning (2026)

In short

For a proposal in Courchevel, choose La Saulire or Le Signal for a summit view in the middle of the day, or the Altiport plateau, the village or your chalet at sunset, which falls around 4:50 pm in December and 6 pm in mid-February. Lifts close in the late afternoon, so plan accordingly and keep an indoor backup.

Where is the best place to propose in Courchevel?

The best place to propose in Courchevel depends on the hour: a summit such as La Saulire or Le Signal in the middle of the day, the Altiport plateau or your chalet terrace at sunset. All the places below are verified against official resort sources for the 2026-2027 winter season, which runs from 4 December 2026 to 18 April 2027.

Should you propose at a summit or in the village?

Propose at a summit if you both ski and want the widest view; propose in the village, at the Altiport or at the chalet if you want sunset, privacy or a partner who does not ski. Each option has a trade-off.

At a summit

La Saulire is the most spectacular choice. Les 3 Vallées describes a 360-degree panorama from 2,740 m including La Grande Casse (3,855 m) and the Vanoise glaciers. Le Signal, above Courchevel Moriond, adds Mont Blanc in the distance on clear days. The downside is the public: summits are lift stations, so you will rarely be alone. Step a short distance away from the lift arrival and the crowd quickly thins out in the photographs.

If your partner does not ski, the Les 3 Vallées pedestrian pass costs 31.40 € per day for winter 2026-2027 and gives access to the lifts open to pedestrians, including those to summits and mountain restaurants.

At the Altiport or in the village

The Altiport plateau above Courchevel 1850 is the best compromise: it is high and open, and you can walk there and back without depending on lift hours. Courchevel Tourisme lists an easy, green-rated winter walk of about 3 km from the Altiport down past the Pralong farm to the centre of Courchevel 1850, which it describes as offering "amazing panoramic views and beautiful chalets on the side of the slopes". Le Praz, bordered by forests, suits couples who prefer snowy trees to big panoramas.

At the chalet

A chalet terrace at dusk is the most private option and the easiest to stage: candles, a table, a bottle chilling in the snow. It also removes every weather and lift constraint.

What time is sunset in Courchevel in December and February?

Sunset in Courchevel falls at about 4:50 pm in December and moves from around 5:40 pm to 6:20 pm through February, according to sunrise-sunset.org. Times below are local (CET).

DateSunriseSunset
5 December 20267:5716:50
15 December 20268:0616:50
21 December 20268:1016:52
31 December 20268:1316:59
1 February 20277:5417:39
14 February 20277:3717:58
28 February 20277:1418:18

Two practical points follow. First, these are astronomical times: in a mountain valley, ridges hide the sun before the official sunset, so aim for the moment well before the time shown and arrive earlier still. Second, lifts close in the late afternoon. The Les 3 Vallées opening page shows typical lift hours of roughly 9 am to 4:30 pm, varying by lift. In December this means a summit proposal at sunset is not possible: you would have no lift down. Keep summit proposals for the middle of the day, and sunset proposals for the Altiport, the village or the chalet. On Valentine's Day 2027, sunset in Courchevel is at 17:58.

How does a hidden photographer work for a proposal?

The photographer arrives before you, blends in at a distance and photographs the whole moment with a long lens, from your approach to the answer and the first minutes afterwards. Your partner should not notice anything until you kneel.

Planning happens in advance, privately, on WhatsApp:

  1. Agree on the exact place. Share a pin or a photo of the spot. On the slopes, choose a landmark that is easy to find, such as a lift arrival or a viewpoint sign.
  2. Fix the time window. The photographer waits in place from a little before; you send a short message when you are on your way.
  3. Describe your clothes. Ski helmets and goggles make everyone look alike. A jacket colour and a hat help the photographer find you.
  4. Choose a signal. For example, taking off your gloves or turning to face the view. That is the cue for the photographer to start shooting closely.
  5. Plan the position. Stand so that your partner faces the photographer or the view, not a wall of skiers. Turn slightly sideways when you kneel, so both faces appear in the picture.
  6. Keep a cover story. On the slopes, a photographer at a viewpoint looks like any skier taking pictures. In the village, the photographer can pass as a passer-by.

After the answer, the photographer comes over, congratulates you and continues with a relaxed portrait session on the spot. That is why even a proposal is worth booking as a one or two-hour session rather than a few minutes. The first photos arrive within 48 hours, and the full gallery within 7 days.

What if the weather is bad on the day?

Have a lower, sheltered or indoor alternative ready and decide the evening before, using the mountain forecast. With Riva Photography Courchevel, moving the session is free if you ask more than 72 hours ahead; after that, 10 % of the session price is due.

How far ahead should you plan a proposal in Courchevel?

Book the photographer as soon as your travel dates are fixed, and settle the place and time in the final week before you propose.

Prices for 2026-2027 start at 590 € for one hour with 30 photos and 790 € for two hours with 60 photos. The full table is in our guide to hiring a photographer in Courchevel.

When you are ready, write to Riva Photography Courchevel on WhatsApp with your date, your village and the kind of place you have in mind. Everything stays between you and us until the moment you kneel.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I propose in Courchevel?

In the middle of the day, La Saulire (2,740 m) or Le Signal above Courchevel Moriond give the biggest views. At sunset, choose the Altiport plateau above Courchevel 1850, the village or your chalet terrace, because the lifts close before or around sunset in winter.

What time is sunset in Courchevel in winter?

According to sunrise-sunset.org, sunset in Courchevel is about 4:50 pm through December 2026, 5:39 pm on 1 February 2027, 5:58 pm on 14 February 2027 and 6:18 pm on 28 February 2027. Surrounding ridges hide the sun somewhat earlier.

Can I propose at the top of La Saulire if my partner does not ski?

Yes. The Saulire cable car runs from Courchevel, and the Les 3 Vallées pedestrian pass costs 31.40 € per day for winter 2026-2027. Go in the middle of the day, since the lifts close in the late afternoon.

How does a hidden proposal photographer stay unnoticed?

The photographer arrives first, waits at a distance with a long lens, finds you from a description of your clothes and starts shooting at an agreed signal. On the slopes, a photographer at a viewpoint simply looks like another skier taking pictures.

What happens if it snows or the cloud is low on the day of the proposal?

Light snow usually makes better pictures. For low cloud or strong wind, switch to a sheltered plan B such as the forest at Courchevel Le Praz or your chalet. With Riva Photography Courchevel, moving the session is free more than 72 hours ahead; after that, 10 % is due.
