In short
The safest ski proposal happens on your feet, not on a chairlift: at a summit viewpoint late in the morning, on a quiet piste before the lifts close, or on the chalet terrace at sunset. Keep the ring in a zipped inside pocket, open the box over packed snow, check the last lift home and, for photos, place a photographer in advance at an agreed landmark.
What are the best ski proposal ideas?
The best ski proposal ideas use a moment the ski day already gives you: a quiet viewpoint, a long lunch, the walk back to the chalet. The ideas that look easiest on paper, such as kneeling on a chairlift, are often the ones most likely to go wrong.
At a summit viewpoint
A lift arrival with a wide view is the classic choice. Ski a few metres away from the lift station and the crowd thins quickly, both in reality and in the photographs. It works best in the late morning or early afternoon, when visibility is usually good and you still have time to celebrate on the way down.
On a mountain restaurant terrace
A terrace lunch is relaxed and warm, and it gives you a table to lean on. The trade-off is the audience: at midday in high season, other guests will be watching. Some people enjoy the applause; others find it uncomfortable.
On the last run of the day
Stopping on a quiet piste on the way home, in warm late-afternoon light, gives a private moment and beautiful pictures. Choose a wide, gentle section where you can stand safely to the side, never below a blind crest.
In the chalet or on its terrace
The most private option, and the only one that does not depend on lifts or wind. A terrace at sunset, a fire indoors and a table set in advance work well, especially if your partner is not a confident skier.
On a chairlift
It sounds romantic, but it is the riskiest idea on the list. You are seated, wearing gloves, above deep snow, with a safety bar in the way and only a few minutes before the arrival. A photographer cannot follow you either, except from the chair behind. If you love the idea, use the chairlift ride to build anticipation and ask the question once you are standing at the top.
Which ski proposal idea suits you? A comparison
Choose according to privacy and how much your plan depends on the weather. A summit has the most impressive view; the chalet has the fewest variables.
| Idea | Privacy | Difficulty | Best time | Photo potential |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summit viewpoint | Low to medium | Medium (weather, wind, crowds) | Late morning to early afternoon | Very high on a clear day |
| Mountain restaurant terrace | Low | Easy | Lunch | Good, more candid than scenic |
| Quiet spot on the last run | High | Medium (timing, safety on the piste) | Late afternoon, before the lifts close | High, with warm low light |
| Chalet terrace at sunset | Very high | Easy | Sunset | High, with the village and peaks behind |
| Indoors by the fire | Very high | Easy | Evening | Good, intimate rather than scenic |
| Chairlift | High | Hard (gloves, height, short ride) | Any | Limited, shot from behind |
What can go wrong with a proposal on a ski trip?
Most problems come from the cold and the equipment, not from nerves. Plan for each one and the moment stays simple.
- The ring in deep snow. A ring dropped in fresh powder can disappear in a second. Open the box over packed snow or a table, never over a drop, and keep it closed until you are kneeling.
- The ring in your ski jacket. Put it in an inside pocket with a zip, close to your body, and check it once on each lift rather than every few minutes. Repeated patting is the first thing a partner notices.
- Gloves and cold hands. You will need to take one glove off to open the box, and your partner will need to take one off to wear the ring. Cold, stiff fingers make both slower. Have liner gloves or a hand warmer in your pocket.
- Helmets and goggles. Ask your partner to lift their goggles before you start, with a natural excuse such as a photo of the view. Faces hidden behind goggles make for disappointing pictures.
- Weather. Low cloud and strong wind ruin summit views, and a lift can close in high wind. Decide the evening before with the mountain forecast and keep a lower or indoor alternative.
- Crowds. Summits and terraces are busiest in the middle of the day during school holidays. Step away from the lift arrival or choose a quieter hour.
- Lift closing times. Lifts stop in the late afternoon, and a proposal followed by a long celebration can leave you on the wrong side of a valley. Check the last lift home before you start.
What time should you propose on a ski holiday?
Propose on the slopes before about 3:30 pm so you have time to ski down calmly, and keep sunset for the village, the Altiport or the chalet. In winter, sunset in Courchevel comes after the main lifts have closed.
The Courchevel ski area is open from 4 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, according to Les 3 Vallées. On the official Les 3 Vallées opening page, the links between Méribel and Courchevel were listed in October 2026, before the season opened, with last times of 16:25 for the Saulire Express 2 gondola and 16:35 for the Loze Express chairlift. Times vary by lift and can change during the season, so check the live lift status on the day.
| Date | Sunset in Courchevel (local time) |
|---|---|
| 15 December 2026 | 16:50 |
| 31 December 2026 | 17:00 |
| 15 January 2027 | 17:16 |
| 14 February 2027 | 17:58 |
| 15 March 2027 | 18:38 |
| 10 April 2027 | 20:12 |
Times come from sunrise-sunset.org; April is in summer time. The sun drops behind the surrounding peaks before the official sunset, so the warmest light on a slope often arrives earlier than the table suggests. That is why a "sunset on the last run" proposal is, in practice, a late-afternoon proposal on a quiet piste, with the real sunset kept for the evening.
How do you hide a photographer at a ski proposal?
The photographer arrives first, waits at a distance with a long lens and looks like any other skier or walker. Your partner should not notice anything until you kneel.
- Fix the spot in advance. Share a pin or a photo on WhatsApp. On the slopes, choose a landmark that is easy to find: a lift arrival, a viewpoint sign, a particular restaurant.
- Agree a time window and a signal. Send a short message when you are on the last lift. Agree a gesture, such as taking off your helmet, that means you are about to propose.
- Describe your clothes. With helmets and goggles, everyone looks alike. Give the colour of both jackets and helmets.
- Use a cover story afterwards. Many couples continue with a short ski session or portraits once the secret is out. It is the easiest way to get relaxed pictures of you both, ring visible.
On the slopes, the photographer needs to ski well enough to reach the spot and follow you down. Riva Photography Courchevel works with private photographers who ski, and on-piste sessions are described in more detail on our ski photoshoot in Courchevel page.
Why is Courchevel a good place for a proposal in the Alps?
Courchevel gives you high summit viewpoints, quieter villages lower down and chalets with terraces, all within the same day, and it is linked to the rest of Les 3 Vallées. That variety makes it easy to have a plan B without changing resort.

Frequently asked questions
Is it a good idea to propose on a chairlift?
It is possible but risky. You are seated, wearing gloves, above deep snow, with a short ride and a safety bar in the way, and a photographer can only shoot from the chair behind. A safer version is to use the ride to build anticipation and propose once you are standing at the top.
How do I carry an engagement ring while skiing?
Keep it in a zipped inside pocket of your ski jacket, close to your body, and avoid checking it constantly. Open the box only over packed snow or a table, never over a slope or fresh powder, where a dropped ring is very hard to find.
What time should I propose on the slopes in Courchevel?
Aim for the late morning or early afternoon, or a quiet run before about 3:30 pm. Main lifts close in the late afternoon and winter sunset comes after that, so keep a sunset proposal for the village, the Altiport or your chalet.
How does a hidden photographer find us on the slopes?
You agree on a landmark such as a lift arrival or viewpoint sign, a time window and a signal in advance, and describe both jackets and helmets. You send a short message when you are on your way, and the photographer waits at a distance with a long lens.
What happens if the weather is bad on the proposal day?
Decide the evening before using the mountain forecast and switch to a lower or indoor plan if cloud or wind is expected at altitude. With Riva Photography Courchevel, moving the session is free if you ask more than 72 hours ahead; after that, 10 % of the price is due.
