Courchevel vs Méribel: Which Resort Suits Your Ski Holiday?

In short

Courchevel and Méribel are neighbouring resorts linked on skis in Les 3 Vallées and share its 600 km. Choose Courchevel for higher villages up to 1,850 m, an altiport with passenger flights and the lively high-end scene of Courchevel 1850; choose Méribel for its position at the centre of the ski area, a strict wood and stone architectural style and a more understated feel.

What is the main difference between Courchevel and Méribel?

The skiing is shared; the setting is not. Courchevel and Méribel sit side by side in Les 3 Vallées, which describes itself as the world's largest interconnected ski area, with 600 km of slopes, 337 runs and 169 lifts across seven resorts. With a 3 Vallées pass you can ski from one to the other in the same morning.

What changes is where you sleep and how the evenings feel. Courchevel is spread across six villages, with Courchevel 1850 at the top and a strong luxury hotel and restaurant scene. Méribel, according to its tourist office, was founded by the British in the 1930s and shaped by a strict architectural charter of wood, stone and slate roofs, with nothing too tall or too loud. Both are excellent; the right choice depends on the kind of stay you want.

How do the villages and altitudes compare?

Courchevel's main village sits higher than any of Méribel's. Courchevel 1850 is the highest base of the two resorts, while Méribel-Mottaret, its highest village, is at 1,750 m. The table lists the altitudes published by each resort's tourist office.

Courchevel villageAltitudeMéribel villageAltitude
Courchevel 18501,850 mMéribel-Mottaret1,750 m
Courchevel Moriond1,650 mMéribel Centre1,450 m

Courchevel La Tania1,400 mMéribel Les Allues1,100 m
Courchevel Le Praz1,300 m
Saint-Bon1,100 m

Altitude matters most for snow at the village doorstep late in the season. Courchevel Tourisme notes that much of its ski area lies above 1,800 m and that snowmaking covers more than half of its slopes.

Which resort has the bigger ski area?

On their own valleys they are about the same size; together with Les 3 Vallées they are identical. Courchevel Tourisme gives 150 km of marked slopes in Courchevel. Méribel's tourist office gives over 150 km of marked runs within the Méribel valley. Both connect to the full 600 km of Les 3 Vallées.

The practical difference is geography. Les 3 Vallées describes Méribel as situated in the centre of the ski area, which makes it a convenient base for exploring all of it.

Which resort is better for luxury and atmosphere?

Courchevel 1850 is the more overtly luxurious choice; Méribel is more understated. Courchevel Tourisme describes Courchevel 1850 as offering excitement, sophistication and direct access to the highest peaks, while the lower villages such as Le Praz keep an authentic Savoyard character. Les 3 Vallées counts 15 Michelin stars across 10 gourmet restaurants in the whole ski area.

Méribel's character comes from its architecture. Its tourist office explains that the charter put in place from the very beginning, with wood, stone and slate roofs, helps the resort blend into the mountain rather than impose itself on it. If you prefer chalet-scale streets to grand hotel fronts, Méribel may suit you better.

Which resort is easier to reach?

Both are reached through Moûtiers, and Méribel is a little closer to the station; Courchevel has its own altiport.

Which resort is better for families?

Both hold the national Famille Plus label, so the choice comes down to facilities. Courchevel has held the label since April 2010. Méribel also holds it and offers clubs and activities for children from 18 months to 16 years.

Children under 5 ski free across Les 3 Vallées, whichever resort you choose. Our guide to Courchevel with kids covers ski schools and family villages in detail.

Do Courchevel and Méribel share any history?

Yes: they co-hosted the 2023 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, held from 6 to 19 February 2023. Men's races ran on L'Éclipse in Courchevel and women's races on the Roc de Fer in Méribel. In 2026-2027 Courchevel hosts a women's World Cup night slalom on 22 December 2026, and Méribel hosts the 75th Challenge des Moniteurs, the French ski instructors' competition, from 12 to 17 April 2027.

So, Courchevel or Méribel?

Choose Courchevel if you want the highest village base, a direct flight option via the altiport, the busy village life of Courchevel 1850, with plenty of bars and restaurants, or a clear family village in Moriond. Choose Méribel if you want the most central base in Les 3 Vallées, a consistent chalet style and a slightly quieter tone. Skiers who plan to cover the whole area every day lean towards Méribel; guests who value the village experience as much as the skiing lean towards Courchevel.
