In short
Reddit's most common advice: stay in Méribel to ski the whole of Les 3 Vallées with the least effort, in Val Thorens (2,300 m, open 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027) for the surest snow and a lively après-ski, and in Courchevel for luxury hotels, restaurants and village life. All three share one 600 km lift system on the 3 Vallées pass.
What does Reddit recommend: Courchevel, Méribel or Val Thorens?
The most common advice in r/skiing threads is to base yourself in Méribel if you want to ski the whole of Les 3 Vallées, in Val Thorens if snow and a lively evening matter most, and in Courchevel if the village, the restaurants and the hotels matter as much as the skiing. None of the three is a bad choice: they share one linked ski area of 600 km across seven resorts, according to Les 3 Vallées.
One summary from a 2019 thread on where to stay still captures the tone of most later discussions: Val Thorens for the party and the snow, Méribel for the village and the mileage, Courchevel for those who can afford it. In a 2025 thread, a commenter put the Courchevel point bluntly: "Courchevel has some great skiing and is lovely but pockets will need to be deep!" For the full side by side of the two neighbours, see Courchevel vs Méribel.
Which base suits which kind of skier?
Reddit's advice divides cleanly by profile. The table combines the recurring recommendations from the threads we read with what the official sites confirm.
| Profile | What Reddit tends to recommend | What we would add |
|---|---|---|
| Skiing the whole area every day | Méribel, often Méribel-Mottaret | Les 3 Vallées describes Méribel as situated in the centre of the ski area |
| Families with mixed levels | Méribel, with Val Thorens as a close second | Courchevel and Méribel both hold the national Famille Plus label |
| Beginners | Rarely discussed directly | Courchevel has Easy Rider areas from every village; Val Thorens lists free carpet lifts and a beginners pass at 50% of the public rate |
| Snow reliability, early or late season | Val Thorens | Val Thorens sits at 2,300 m and opens on 21 November 2026, closing on 2 May 2027 |
| Après-ski and nightlife | Val Thorens for a party crowd; Courchevel 1850 for late dinners and clubs | La Folie Douce has sites in both Val Thorens and Méribel-Courchevel |
| Luxury hotels, restaurants, village life | Courchevel | Courchevel also has an altiport with passenger flights |
A recurring piece of family advice, from a 2026 thread about Méribel at New Year, is that Mottaret gives direct lift connections towards both Val Thorens and Courchevel. Our Courchevel with kids guide covers ski schools and family villages on the Courchevel side.
Where do the Reddit threads disagree?
The two real arguments are about snow quality in a given week and about Courchevel's atmosphere.
Is the snow always better in Val Thorens?
Usually, but not every week. The author of a January 2026 trip report wrote that "Val Thorens has the best slopes with snow comparing to another valleys." Another commenter in the same thread disagreed, describing rocks in Val Thorens over the holidays and better conditions in Courchevel and Méribel, which a local attributed to strong wind. In the 2026 Méribel thread, one skier who had stayed in all three said they preferred Val Thorens "for ease only", while another found Méribel icy and Courchevel poor after 1 pm in February 2025. Altitude improves the odds; wind and sun still decide the day.
Is Courchevel worth the price?
Opinions split. Some commenters find Courchevel 1850 formal; others come back for the skiing and the dining. Remember that Courchevel is six villages, and the lower ones such as Le Praz and La Tania feel quieter than 1850. Our Courchevel villages guide explains the differences.
Is altitude a good reason to choose Val Thorens?
Yes for December and late April trips, less so in mid-winter. A commenter in the 2019 thread noted that none of the three bases is low, so altitude matters most at the start and end of the season. That matches the official dates.
| Courchevel | Méribel | Val Thorens | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Highest village | Courchevel 1850, 1,850 m | Méribel-Mottaret, 1,750 m | Val Thorens, 2,300 m |
| Marked slopes in its own area | 150 km | Over 150 km | 150 km (Val Thorens-Orelle) |
| Season 2026-2027 | 4 December 2026 to 18 April 2027 (1850) | 5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027 | 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027 |
| 3 Vallées links open | 5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027 | Same dates | Same dates |
The table settles one Reddit debate. When a commenter claimed that Val Thorens was the highest resort in Europe, another replied that it only has the highest village. Les 3 Vallées itself describes Val Thorens, at 2,300 m, as the highest ski resort in Europe, so both are talking about the village altitude. If you plan a trip in the last week of April, note that Méribel and Courchevel close on 18 April 2027, while Val Thorens runs until 2 May.
Can you really ski the whole 3 Valleys from one base?
Yes from Méribel, and with a full day's planning from Courchevel or Val Thorens. Commenters consistently say Méribel makes day trips easy and the far end is a commitment from Courchevel. A former guide in the 2024 Courchevel thread warned: "As soon as you start being in other valleys after the lifts have shut you're in for a bad time." The same thread advised keeping après-ski in your own valley and buying the full 3 Vallées pass for every day rather than mixing passes.
That advice holds up. A Courchevel Valley pass does not cover Méribel or Val Thorens, and the 3 Vallées links close on fixed times each afternoon. Our step-by-step guide to skiing from Courchevel to Val Thorens gives the official route, the lifts and the turn-back advice from Les 3 Vallées.
Budget threads also mention cheaper bases outside the three resorts, such as Brides-les-Bains or Les Menuires, which are on the same 3 Vallées pass but add travel time to every ski day.
What does Reddit say, and what did we check?
Most of the advice is sound; a few figures have moved.
| What Reddit says | What the official sources say (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Méribel is the best base for the whole area | Les 3 Vallées describes Méribel as the centre of the ski area |
| Val Thorens has the surest snow | It is the highest village at 2,300 m and has the longest season, 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027 |
| Méribel closes in the last week of April | Méribel closes on 18 April 2027 this season |
| About 409 € for a week's 3 Vallées pass | 421 € for an adult 6-day pass in high season 2026-2027 |
| Christmas and New Year are the busiest, most expensive weeks | The official high season runs from 19 December 2026 to 9 April 2027 |
One free tip from the January 2026 report is worth keeping: lunch at 11.30 for a table and quieter slopes.
So which base should you book for 2026-2027?
Choose Méribel to ski the most terrain with the least planning, Val Thorens for an early or late season trip and a busy après-ski, and Courchevel when the stay itself, the restaurants, the hotels and the village evenings, are part of the holiday. For a split group, Reddit's compromise is Méribel-Mottaret.
Riva Photography Courchevel works only in a few of the most exclusive Alpine resorts: Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens and Megève, with photographers who ski with you. Val Thorens, at 2,300 m, is the highest village in Les 3 Vallées and has the longest season, from 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027. Reddit users note that wind and sun can still make conditions better elsewhere in a given week.
