In short
The best time to ski in Courchevel is mid January to early February, or 8 March to 2 April 2027, when no French school zone is on holiday. February is the busiest month, with French holidays from 6 February to 7 March and UK half-term 15 to 19 February in councils such as Surrey. The season runs from 4 December 2026 to 18 April 2027.
When is the best time to ski in Courchevel in 2026-2027?
For most visitors the best time to ski in Courchevel is mid January to early February or the second and third weeks of March. Both fall outside every French school holiday zone, so pistes and lift queues are usually calmer. The season itself runs from Friday 4 December 2026 to Sunday 18 April 2027, according to Courchevel Tourism.
Crowd levels below come from the official school holiday calendars and low season dates; the snow column is general guidance, not a forecast.
| Month | Crowds | Atmosphere | Light for photos | Snow (general guidance) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| December 2026 | Quiet until 18 December, then very busy from 19 December (French Christmas holidays) | Opening weeks, then the festive fortnight and the World Cup night slalom on 22 December | Short days, low sun, long shadows | Early season: cover depends on the first snowfalls and on snowmaking |
| January 2027 | Busy until 3 January, then one of the calmest periods of the season | Relaxed, more space on the pistes and in restaurants | Crisp, often cold light; sun still low | Midwinter conditions; check the snow report |
| February 2027 | Busiest month: French winter holidays from 6 February, UK half-term 15 to 19 February in Surrey and Hertfordshire | Lively, family-heavy, full resort | Longer days than January | Conditions vary from year to year; check the snow report |
| March 2027 | Busy to 7 March, then calm from 8 March until early April | Relaxed, sunny terraces, more couples and groups of friends | Brighter and higher sun, longer afternoons | Spring snow can soften in the afternoon on sunnier slopes |
| April 2027 | French spring holidays from 3 April; low season prices from 10 April; closes 18 April | End of season, unhurried mornings | Strong light, best early in the day | Late season: lower runs are the first to suffer |

Is December a good time to ski in Courchevel?
December is good for the first fortnight if you want quiet slopes and lower prices, and lively but crowded from 19 December. The Courchevel ski area opens on 4 December 2026, and Les 3 Vallées prices its low season from 5 to 18 December 2026, when a six-day adult 3 Vallées pass costs 378.50 € instead of 421 € in high season.
The French Christmas holidays start on Saturday 19 December 2026 for every zone and run until Monday 4 January 2027, according to Service-Public.gouv.fr. That fortnight is when the resort is at its fullest. Its main sporting event is a women's Alpine Ski World Cup slalom on Tuesday 22 December 2026 at the Stade Émile-Allais, announced as a night race. For the festive period in detail, read our Courchevel Christmas and New Year guide.
The risk in early December is natural snow, which is unknown until it falls; snowmaking helps, but not every run may be open in the first week.
Why is Courchevel in January often the best value?
Courchevel in January is quieter than any other high season month once French schools go back on Monday 4 January 2027. From then until Friday 5 February no French zone is on holiday, so lift queues, ski school groups and restaurant bookings are generally easier.
January is midwinter, so expect cold mornings and short afternoons. In return, there is more room on the pistes, and clear, cold days give crisp light for photos.
Sport fans can watch the ISMF Ski Mountaineering World Cup in Courchevel from 14 to 16 January 2027 (vertical and individual races), according to the 2026-2027 calendar published by the German Alpine Club.
When are the French school holidays and UK February half-term in 2026-2027?
The French winter holidays run from Saturday 6 February until classes resume on Monday 8 March 2027, staggered across three zones. The UK February half-term is 15 to 19 February 2027 in the two English councils we checked, Surrey and Hertfordshire, which falls in the middle of the French holidays. The official French dates, from Service-Public.gouv.fr, are below; classes resume on the Monday shown.
| Holiday | Zone A (Lyon, Grenoble, Bordeaux and others) | Zone B (Marseille, Nice, Lille, Nantes and others) | Zone C (Paris, Versailles, Créteil, Montpellier, Toulouse) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas | 19 Dec 2026 to 4 Jan 2027 | 19 Dec 2026 to 4 Jan 2027 | 19 Dec 2026 to 4 Jan 2027 |
| Winter | 13 Feb to 1 Mar 2027 | 20 Feb to 8 Mar 2027 | 6 Feb to 22 Feb 2027 |
| Spring | 10 Apr to 26 Apr 2027 | 17 Apr to 3 May 2027 | 3 Apr to 19 Apr 2027 |
The heaviest overlap is the week of 13 to 21 February 2027, when zones A and C are both on holiday, and that week also contains the UK half-term in Surrey and Hertfordshire. If you are tied to the Courchevel February half-term, book accommodation, ski school and restaurants as early as possible.
UK school holidays in the councils we checked
| Council | February half-term 2027 | Easter break 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Surrey County Council | 15 to 19 February | Term ends 25 March, summer term starts 12 April |
| Hertfordshire County Council | 15 to 19 February | 26 March to 9 April |
UK term dates are set locally and differ between councils, and academies, free schools and independent schools may set their own. Check your child's school calendar before booking. Families can find more planning tips in our Courchevel with kids guide.
Is Courchevel in March a good time to go?
Courchevel in March is one of the most pleasant times to ski, especially from 8 March to 2 April 2027, when no French zone is on holiday. Days are longer and the mood is relaxed.
The trade-off is the snow. Spring sun can soften the snow on sunnier slopes by the afternoon, so many skiers plan their longest runs for the morning and keep the afternoon for lunch and gentler pistes. The Easter break in many English councils begins in late March 2027 (see the table above), so the last week of March may get busier with British families.
Is it worth skiing in Courchevel in April?
April suits flexible skiers who prefer lower prices and sunshine to deep winter snow. Low season returns on 10 April 2027, with the six-day adult 3 Vallées pass back at 378.50 €, and the season ends on Sunday 18 April 2027.
Zone C (Paris and the surrounding académies) is on spring holiday from 3 April, zone A from 10 April and zone B from 17 April, so early April is not empty. Check open lifts and pistes on courchevel.com or the Les 3 Vallées app before you set off.
How reliable are Courchevel snow conditions?
Courchevel snow conditions are among the more dependable in the Alps because of its altitude and snowmaking, but no month is guaranteed. The ski area rises from 1,100 m to 2,738 m, and around 60% of the area is covered by snowmaking, according to the French national association of mountain resort mayors (ANMSM). Courchevel offers 150 km of pistes and is linked to the 600 km of Les 3 Vallées.
Snowfall varies widely between winters, so before travelling check the snow report on courchevel.com and the Météo-France mountain forecast.
When is the best light for ski photos in Courchevel?
As a rule of thumb, the best light for ski photos is the first two hours after the lifts open and the last hour before they close, in any month. Midday sun on snow is harsh and makes people squint; lower sun gives the snow texture.
- December and January: the sun stays low all day, so long shadows and soft side light are available for longer. Cold, clear mornings tend to give the cleanest skies.
- February: more light and more people, so start early for empty pistes.
- March and April: brighter, higher sun. Morning sessions keep the snow firm and the light kinder; late afternoon on terraces works well for relaxed portraits.
- Grey days: flat light suits portraits near the trees better than action on open pistes.

When is the Courchevel February half-term week in 2027?
In the English councils checked, Surrey and Hertfordshire, the February half-term runs from 15 to 19 February 2027. It overlaps with the French winter holidays, which run from 6 February until classes resume on 8 March 2027, so it is one of the busiest weeks of the season.
Is Courchevel busy in January?
