What does the Palace distinction mean for a Courchevel hotel?

Palace is an official French distinction above the five-star classification, awarded by Atout France, the national tourism agency. It is not a marketing label. It was created by a ministerial order of 8 November 2010, amended on 24 January 2024, and it is granted for three years, compared with five years for star ratings.

According to Atout France's June 2026 press kit, a hotel can only apply if it already holds five stars, has rooms of at least 26 square metres, meets all the enhanced five-star criteria and has been open for at least 24 months (or 12 months after a full renovation). A commission then visits each candidate and assesses, among other things, the location, the architecture, the share of suites, the service, the restaurants and bar, and the hotel's character.

On 2 June 2026 Atout France published its 2026 list of 33 Palace hotels in France. Seven are in the Alps, and five of those are in Courchevel.

Which Courchevel hotels are Palaces in 2026?

Five hotels hold the Palace distinction in Courchevel, all in Courchevel 1850. Room counts and addresses come from the official Atout France register of classified hotels, downloaded in October 2026.

Three of the five are in the Jardin Alpin district of Courchevel 1850. Fouquet's Courchevel is described by Courchevel Tourism as ski-in, ski-out on the Bellecôte piste. None of the six hotels that received the distinction for the first time in 2026 is in Courchevel: all five Courchevel Palaces already held it.

Which other five-star hotels are there in Courchevel?

Beyond the Palaces, the Atout France register lists 20 more five-star hotels in the commune of Courchevel, for a total of 25. All but one are in Courchevel 1850. We checked each hotel's village on its own website or on its Courchevel Tourism listing in October 2026.

The range is wide. Le Chalet de Courchevel has six rooms and Lys Martagon seven, while Le Lana and Le Palace des Neiges have more than 80. The newest five-star classification in the list is Rosewood Courchevel Le Jardin Alpin, classified in January 2026. Courchevel Tourism describes Le Chabichou and Le Grand Hôtel as ski-in, ski-out, and Manali Lodge as sitting at the foot of the green Belvédère piste in Moriond.

Where are the hotels in Moriond, Village, Le Praz and La Tania?

The lower villages have fewer hotels, mostly four-star and three-star, and are often chosen for a calmer stay or a family trip. The table shows the classified hotels we could place in each village, with their Atout France rating.

Courchevel 1850 also has seven four-star hotels in the register: Hôtel de la Loze, Hôtel des Trois Vallées, Le Courcheneige, Le K2 Djola, Les Sherpas, White 1921 Courchevel and Lake Hotel Courchevel 1850.

Hotel or chalet: which suits your stay?

A hotel suits short stays, couples and travellers who want restaurants, a spa and a concierge on site. A chalet suits larger families and groups who want privacy, their own schedule and space to gather in the evening. Courchevel Tourism lists both, alongside apartments, lodges and bed and breakfasts, and real estate agencies that handle chalet rentals.

According to Courchevel Tourism, many places to stay are ski-in, ski-out, especially in Courchevel 1850, Moriond and La Tania. When you compare options, ask the hotel or agency directly how far you are from the nearest piste or lift and how you get to ski school, rather than relying on the words "ski-in, ski-out" alone. How can you check a hotel's official rating?

Star ratings in France are awarded under the Atout France classification and are valid for five years. Atout France publishes the full register of classified accommodation as open data on data.gouv.fr, with each hotel's rating, address, number of rooms and classification date. The list of Palace hotels is published separately on the Atout France website.

• If a hotel describes itself as a palace, check that it appears on the Atout France Palace list for the current year.
• If a website shows five stars, the register shows the date of the classification, so you can see when it was last assessed.
• Courchevel Tourism states that the resort offers 45 hotels, from two-star to palace, and its own listings show the village of each one.

The register is updated regularly. A few hotels in the area are registered under Saint-Bon-Tarentaise rather than Courchevel: Les Monts Charvin, for example, is listed there although Courchevel Tourism places it in the heart of Courchevel 1850. Searching under both names gives the fullest picture.
