Ski Holiday Photographer: Is It Worth It, What It Costs and How to Choose (2026)

In short

A ski holiday photographer skis with your group and photographs you on the pistes, so everyone appears in the pictures, faces and action included. It is worth it for milestone trips and families who never get a shot together. In Courchevel for 2026-2027, sessions with Riva Photography Courchevel start at 590 €, plus the photographer's lift pass for on-piste sessions.

What does a ski holiday photographer actually do?

A ski holiday photographer follows your group on the mountain and photographs the day as it happens: the walk to the lift, runs together, a break on a terrace, the last descent of the afternoon. The difference with a portrait or wedding photographer is that the work happens on skis, in the cold, between lifts.

That changes several practical things:

If you want ideas for the shots themselves, our list of ski photoshoot ideas sorts them by time of day.

What are the options for getting good ski holiday photos?

There are four realistic options: automatic photo points on the slopes, a friend or family member with a phone, an action camera you wear yourself, and a private ski photographer. Each one suits a different kind of trip, and many families combine two of them.

OptionHow it worksStrengthsLimitsIndicative cost
Automatic photo pointsA fixed camera at a viewpoint, triggered by your ski pass; photos are retrieved online or in an appQuick, no effort, good panoramasOne fixed angle per spot; mostly found in Austrian resorts; check locally whether your resort has themOften free with the ski pass where they exist
Friend or family member with a phoneSomeone in the group stops and takes the pictureSpontaneous, always availableThat person is never in the photos; phones struggle in the cold and with fast movementNone beyond the phone
Action camera (helmet, chest or pole)You film or photograph yourself while skiingCaptures speed and the skier's viewWide angle, few faces, hours of footage to sort; batteries suffer in the coldPrice of the camera and accessories
Private ski photographerA professional skis with you and photographs the groupEveryone in the frame, edited photos, faces and actionNeeds booking ahead; photographer's lift pass usually addedFrom 590 € for 1 hour with Riva Photography Courchevel (2026-2027)

Automatic photo points

Photo points are cameras placed at scenic spots. With the Skiline system, guests trigger the camera with their ski ticket, or with a guest card, QR code or barcode ticket, and the photos then appear in the app and at the terminal. Travel company Snowtrex describes them as free for guests with a ski pass, with photos found online using the ski pass number, and its examples are all in Austria and Switzerland. They are a nice extra, but give one angle per spot.

An action camera

Helmet and chest cameras give the feeling of speed that a photo from the side cannot. GoPro, for instance, sells an Enduro battery that it says improves cold weather performance in temperatures down to -10 °C compared with its standard batteries. The trade off is a very wide angle and few faces: an action camera shows where you skied more than who you skied with.

How much does a ski photographer cost?

For a private session in Courchevel in the 2026-2027 season, Riva Photography Courchevel's prices run from 590 € for one hour and 30 edited photos to 2,970 € for a two-day weekend with more than 500 photos, VAT included. For on-piste sessions, the photographer's lift pass is added at the public price.

Classic session2 hours60790 €
Half day4 hours1201,290 €
Full day8 hours2501,970 €

To give an idea of the lift pass element: the official Courchevel ski pass office lists an adult one-day Les 3 Vallées pass at 84.20 € and a four-hour pass at 75.10 € in high season, which runs from 19 December 2026 to 9 April 2027. A one-hour session in the village or at your chalet has no lift pass on top.

For a ski session, two hours is usually the shortest format that makes sense: it leaves time for a few lifts, two or three runs and a stop for portraits. The full price list is on our pricing page.

What should you check before you hire a ski photographer?

Before booking, ask six questions: can the photographer ski at your level, is the lift pass included, how quickly are photos delivered, what happens if the weather turns, how many edited photos you receive, and what you may do with them. The answers say more about the result than a portfolio alone.

  1. Do they ski at your level? If your group skis red and black runs, the photographer needs to be comfortable there too, with a camera bag on their back.
  2. Is the lift pass included? Some quotes include it, others add it. Knowing in advance avoids a surprise on the invoice.
  3. When do you get the photos? Ask for both a first selection and the full gallery.
  4. What is the weather policy? Mountain weather can change within a day. Look for a clear rule on postponement and on what you pay if you cancel late.
  5. How many edited photos? A number of finished images is more useful than an hourly rate on its own, and lets you compare offers.
  6. What are the usage rights? Under French law, the photographer is the author of the photos and keeps that right even when working under a service contract. Personal use is normally covered; if you want to use the pictures for a business, a brand or advertising, agree it in writing first.

When is the best time in the holiday to book the session?

Book the session for the second or third day of your stay rather than the first. By then everyone has their ski legs back, children are settled into ski school, and you know which runs the group enjoys.

Keep the end of the week as a fallback in case of bad weather. In Courchevel, the 2026-2027 season runs from 4 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, according to Les 3 Vallées, so there is plenty of choice outside the busiest school holiday weeks. For families, a morning session tends to work better than an afternoon one: our guide to Courchevel with kids covers the rhythm of a ski day with children.

How does a ski session with Riva Photography Courchevel work?

You write on WhatsApp with your dates, the size of your group, your skiing level and the kind of photos you want. Riva Photography Courchevel matches you with a partner photographer who skis, sends a quote including the lift pass at the public price, and the photographer meets you at an agreed lift or at your chalet.

Sessions can take place across the ski area, from Courchevel 1850 to Méribel and Val Thorens. All the details of the on-piste format are on our page for a ski photographer in Courchevel, and our Courchevel photographer guide covers village and chalet sessions.

Is a ski holiday photographer worth it?

It is worth it if you want photos of the whole group skiing together, with faces visible, and if the trip marks something: a first family ski holiday, a milestone birthday, a proposal or a reunion of friends. For a quick souvenir of the view, a phone or a photo point is enough.

If you are planning a stay in Courchevel this winter, send us your dates on WhatsApp. We will tell you which format fits your group and what the lift pass would add, with no obligation to book.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a ski photographer cost in Courchevel?

With Riva Photography Courchevel, a private session costs from 590 euros for one hour and 30 edited photos to 2,970 euros for a two-day weekend, VAT included, for the 2026-2027 season. For sessions on the pistes, the photographer's lift pass is added at the public price.

Does a ski photographer need a lift pass?

Yes, for any session on the pistes the photographer has to use the lifts like any skier. With Riva Photography Courchevel, the photographer's pass is added to the quote at the public price; sessions in the village or at a chalet have no lift pass cost.

Do I need to be a good skier to book a ski photographer?

No. Sessions can be built around easy blue runs, the snow front or a terrace. Tell the photographer your group's level in advance so they choose runs where everyone is comfortable.

How long should a ski photo session last?

Two hours is a good minimum on the pistes, as it allows a few lifts, several runs and time for portraits. One hour suits a single setting such as the snow front or a chalet terrace, and a half day works for groups or mixed ski levels.

When do you receive the photos?

With Riva Photography Courchevel, the first photos arrive within 48 hours of the session and the full edited gallery within 7 days, or 14 days for weddings.
